As Mr. Roger's voice echoes in the back of my mind, I wanted to tell you about what I am excited about this week besides the nice weather. Natural backdrops for head shot photography! First, lets be clear... I hate the term "head shots". Somehow in the history of photography they came up with the violent commonly used term "head shot" for business portraits and photo shoots. I deplore guns and anything to do with them. I am the Mom that doesn't allow my children to even play with toy guns. The irony is not lost on me that my profession has words like photo shoot and head shots! I would like to introduce a new term for head shot like "profile image", "face photo" or even "hire me image".
So back to what I was excited about... In the last blog I mentioned some nice light on the side of a barn on our property. After a successful session with my son there, I decided to bring a client to do their "profile image". I really love using natural light and would much rather be working outdoors instead of inside a studio with the small parameters of a studio backdrop. For this session we used the barn again on the shady side for more even light and we used a tree trunk. I love the business/ earthy mix to the portrait.
I am thinking of making my own backdrops for outdoor photo sessions. Maybe with wood and old metal, it could end up being a new art project or at the very least be some nice garden addition. Stay tuned for more!
